United by Blue and REI Co-op join their Companies to Continue the Blue Friday Initiative to Help Save the Ocean

REI Co-op joins the United by Blue Team to work together on their DIY cleanup campaign that will prioritize environmental impact over sales encouraging customers to stop consuming goods and start helping clean the environment.

PHILADELPHIA – September 9, 2020 — United by Blue and REI Co-op founders are collaborating for the first time encouraging consumers to be part of the Blue Friday Initiative (https://unitedbyblue.com/pages/optoutside-cleanups) that will be launched this November 27, the project seeks to inspire people anywhere in their home communities to contribute in environmental activism and do a community cleanup in their area.

The initiative was originally launched by the eco-friendly outdoor brand United by Blue in 2016. Since then the project has expanded over the years, providing many DIY cleanup kits, reaching more people around the globe, and teaching the importance of volunteering on this environmental mission. “If we can change mindsets at the volunteer level, those people become the changemakers in their own communities,” Mike Cangi, co-founder of United by Blue said. “Our long-term goal is not just about removing trash, but the education piece of these cleanups where people are becoming more aware of the issues facing the environment, specifically the oceans, and then being able to leave with actionable changes.”

Blue Friday is an attempt to gather volunteers, customers, and employees around the world and invite them to think before consuming on Black Friday and do a community cleanup in their area. This will help the company collect important data that will later be submitted to ocean conservation research organizations to further their work on reducing ocean and water contamination. This year, United by Blue partnered with REI Co-op hosting cleanups and selling cleanup kits that include a trash bag, protective gloves, and a bandana for $10.  Due to the current pandemic, REI Co-op and United by Blue are encouraging the volunteers to follow the necessary safety regulations in their home communities.

United by Blue focuses on ocean conservation since its creation and with every product sold, they have been able to remove one pound of trash from oceans and waters. The founders, Mike Cangi and Brian Linton have accepted that ocean pollution is an issue that should be addressed immediately. The mission of the company is to mobilize and educate the community about the importance of volunteering in order to reduce environmental pollution. They seek to encourage consumers to be more mindful and live a less wasteful life.
